Sometimes meaningful change doesn’t require a different approach. It requires enough time to stay with what is already beginning to emerge.
Traditional weekly therapy provides a steady rhythm for growth. For many people, it is exactly what they need. Yet there are times when fifty minutes simply isn’t enough. Just as you begin settling into an important emotional experience, the session ends. You leave feeling that something meaningful had just begun to unfold.
Gestalt therapy intensives create a different kind of therapeutic space.
Rather than spreading the work across many shorter sessions, an intensive offers several uninterrupted hours to slow down, remain present with what is emerging, and engage more fully in the experiential process of therapy.
For some people, this allows months of therapeutic momentum to develop in a single day—not because healing can be rushed, but because the work has time to deepen naturally.
What Is a Therapy Intensive?
A therapy intensive is an extended psychotherapy session designed to create more time for meaningful therapeutic work than is typically possible during a standard appointment.
Rather than feeling pressured by the clock, you have space to settle into your experience, explore important themes with greater depth, and remain present through emotional processes that often require more than fifty minutes to unfold.
Gestalt therapy intensives are available for individuals, romantic partners, married couples, polycules, adult family members, close friends, and other important relationships seeking a dedicated space for deeper exploration.
Why More Time Matters
Experiential therapy unfolds differently than conversations focused primarily on problem-solving or advice.
Awareness often develops gradually.
An emotion that initially seems small may become clearer when given enough attention. A familiar pattern may reveal unexpected layers. A meaningful conversation between partners may take time before both people feel fully present. An experiment may continue unfolding long after it first begins.
Rather than interrupting these processes because the session has ended, therapy intensives allow us to remain with what is already emerging.
Sometimes what people need most is not a new technique.
Sometimes they simply need enough time.
Gestalt Therapy Is Experiential
As a Certified Gestalt Therapist, I approach therapy as an experiential process rather than simply a conversation about problems.
We become curious about your thoughts, emotions, bodily experience, relationships, movement, dreams, and present-moment awareness. Therapy may include dialogue, somatic awareness, Gestalt experiments, dreamwork, emotional expression, mindfulness, and relational exploration.
These experiences cannot always be predicted or scheduled. They unfold in relationship, often at their own pace.
An intensive creates space to follow that process with greater continuity rather than repeatedly stopping and restarting from week to week.
Therapy Intensives for Individuals
Individual intensives offer dedicated time to explore experiences that benefit from sustained attention.
Some people seek an intensive while working through complex trauma, attachment wounds, burnout, grief, life transitions, identity development, religious trauma, recurring dreams, or long-standing patterns that continue shaping their lives.
Others choose an intensive because they travel frequently, have demanding schedules, live in another city, or simply appreciate longer periods of uninterrupted reflection.
The focus is never on accomplishing as much as possible.
It is on creating enough space for meaningful awareness to develop.
Relationship Intensives
Relationships often benefit from having more time than a traditional therapy session allows.
Meaningful conversations sometimes require time to move beyond defensiveness, misunderstanding, or old patterns before genuine contact becomes possible.
Relationship intensives are available for romantic partners, married couples, polyamorous and ethically non-monogamous relationships, polycules, adult family members, chosen family, and close friends.
Rather than teaching communication scripts or deciding who is right, Gestalt relationship work becomes curious about what happens between people as they attempt to connect. We explore the relational field together, noticing how emotions, bodily experience, expectations, attachment, history, and present-moment interactions shape the relationship as it unfolds.
The additional time often allows conversations to continue toward deeper understanding rather than ending just as meaningful dialogue begins.
What Happens During an Intensive?
No two intensives look exactly alike because every person and every relationship brings something different into the room.
Depending on what naturally emerges, our work may include:
- Dialogue and relational exploration
- Somatic awareness
- Gestalt experiments
- Dreamwork
- Emotional expression
- Exploring attachment patterns
- Working with unfinished emotional experiences
- Mindfulness and present-moment awareness
- Relationship dynamics
- Clarifying values, needs, and boundaries
The goal is never to force dramatic breakthroughs. Instead, we create conditions where awareness can deepen naturally and where new possibilities have room to emerge.
Who Might Benefit from a Therapy Intensive?
Therapy intensives may be a good fit for people who:
- Feel limited by the pace of weekly therapy
- Travel frequently or have demanding schedules
- Want dedicated time for a particular concern
- Are navigating major life transitions
- Are exploring trauma or attachment wounds
- Want to strengthen an important relationship
- Feel emotionally “stuck” in recurring patterns
- Prefer immersive experiential work
- Live farther away and want to make the most of their therapy time
An intensive is not inherently better than weekly therapy.
For many people, the two approaches complement one another beautifully.
Healing Cannot Be Rushed
It can be tempting to think of a therapy intensive as a way to solve everything more quickly.
Healing rarely works that way.
An intensive does not compress months of emotional growth into a single day through force or intensity.
Instead, it creates enough uninterrupted time for awareness to develop more fully, for emotions to be experienced rather than hurried past, and for meaningful relational work to continue without repeatedly being interrupted by the clock.
The goal is not speed.
The goal is depth.
Therapy Is About More Than Solving Problems
People often begin therapy because something hurts.
That suffering deserves attention.
But therapy can also become a place to cultivate authenticity, creativity, vitality, intimacy, joy, self-trust, and richer relationships.
An intensive offers time not only to understand what has been difficult, but also to discover what becomes possible when you no longer organize your life entirely around old survival strategies.
